Omar Gandhi Architects began in 2010 with small, site-sensitive private residences along the Nova Scotia coast, building a reputation for material craft and regional sensitivity on an intimate, single-client scale. That same design ethos has now carried the studio into larger civic and public work—libraries, galleries, and landmark public spaces—broadening its focus from private homes to architecture that serves entire communities.

OMAR GANDHI is a Canadian architect, born in Toronto and raised in Brampton and currently practicing and residing in both Halifax, Nova Scotia and Toronto, Ontario. After studying in the Regional Arts program at Mayfield Secondary School (Caledon) and then the inaugural Architectural Studies Program at the University of Toronto Omar moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia where he received his Master’s degree in 2005 at Dalhousie University. After graduation, Omar worked for some of Canada’s most respected architectural practices. Gandhi started his own design studio in 2010 and became a registered architectural practice in 2012.
Almost immediately, with the support of his small team - the studio became one of Canada’s most exciting and decorated. In 2014 Gandhi was hailed as “Canada’s Next Top Architect” by the Globe & Mail and in the year following was listed in Monocle Magazine’s “20 most influential Canadians” roundup. Omar was appointed as the Louis I. Kahn visiting Assistant Professor in Architectural Design at the Yale School of Architecture for the Fall semester of the 2018-19 academic year. When not in the studio, Omar spends his time wandering the streets of the North End of Halifax, playing with his son, and traveling internationally to both teach and lecture.

OMAR GANDHI ARCHITECTS
Omar Gandhi Architects (OGA) was founded in 2010, and has design studios in Toronto, Halifax, and Berlin. The internationally honoured practice has produced a portfolio of architecture and other designed products for projects ranging from homes and innovative urban in-fills to medium and large-scale public works, and historic landscapes.
Gandhi and his highly collaborative OGA team create architecture that responds in often remarkable ways to design briefs. ‘There is a sense of play and the unexpected in key parts of our designs,’ explains Gandhi. As a result, each scheme is unique and surprising in form and interiors, and in the way materials are expressed.
Winner of 25 international awards in 2023-24, including Practice of the Year awards from Architizer, Architects Newspaper Awards, and the Architectural Masterprize, Omar Gandhi Architects continues to earn widespread international praise and academic recognition.
Additional accolades include the Canada Council for the Arts Professional Prix de Rome, Architectural Record Magazine’s 2018 Design Vanguard, and the Canadian Governor General’s Medal in Architecture.
